DC Statehood is a pure political battle. This has nothing to do with 'what is right for people'.

DC is 93% Democratic. Republicans would never vote for it because it would be giving more power to the Democrats (one more in the house and two more senators), the exact same way that the Democrats would never vote for it if the situation was reversed. It makes for good comments back and forth and sound-bites to further whatever political cause the speaker is going for, but it's just another way for one party to 'one up' the other party (heck, Rep. Raskin even acknowledge that one of the reasons for it would give more power to the Democrat policies).

This has nothing to do with race, (I was wondering how long it would be before that was thrown into the picture ... just under 4 minutes in on the video), creed, religion or anything else - it's all about political power.

If the concern is on 'what is right for the people', then simple solution - shrink the size of the federal district and give everything back to Maryland (Virginia already took back in the mid-1800s the portion it originally gave up).

Advocates of granting DC statehood can castigate opponents for playing politics and they would be absolutely correct. However, any attempt to cloak themselves in moral superiority that THEY don't play politics with it is a complete sham.
