To any of fighter jocks out there ... a naval aviator once told me that one of the best ways to avoid a heat seeking missile was to "turn the cold side of the aircraft towards the missile". He's also dropping chaff to provide other heat sources. Is this the maneuver that the piolet was trying to describe to me?

Yeah like the other guy said flares. That's the idea anyway. I am not a fighter jock but did work with weapon system integration for simulators that gave me a little background. In some respects the flares blind the missile seeker so that it no longer can keep an accurate target track lock long enough for the plane to evade the missile as it runs out of energy when the rocket propellant burns out. Its like shining a bright spotlight in somebody's eyes because the seeker head gets overwhelmed with energy and the idea is to keep the seeker away from the exhaust which can be anywhere from 700 to 1000 celcius.
