What is going on in those schools and more than likely in many schools across the nation, especially in the inner cities, is criminal. Yeah, people blame Covid, I blame the teachers unions.
The unions didn’t, and in many cases, want teachers to go back to in school teaching. For students that had parents or grandparents that were able to be involved in the online teaching, the students didn’t backslide. In homes where that wasn’t possible, there was no effective teaching. In some cases, the students were probably not online in many inner city schools.
Thankfully, my granddaughter only had less than a half year online, but she had two grandmothers, both retired educators working with her. She never lost ground. Inschool education was only for a short time. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Atlanta city schools. They were “online” for a long time and the teachers resisted going back to the classroom.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I believe your last statement wholeheartedly! However, not all elementary and high school teachers are able to effectively teach online. In most instances, I find online works pretty well at university level but the students need to be self motivated, which, and we all know, not all university students are.
I did a masters degree in nursing Ed, online and taught both online and in-person. I had to be much more creative in the online venue.

Maj Robert Thornton Good point that brought back a memory. Back in the dark ages when the Air Force directed us to move many of our classes to Computer Based Training (CBT) we discovered that many of our "best" instructors weren't necessarily in tune with CBT. They needed the feedback that came only from face to face interaction.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Unfortunately in lower socioeconomic communities the parents are either working two jobs or do not have the education to build their children up and the cycle repeats. So many parents use school as daycare while they work to put food on the table and the online education really put a hamper in their children's growth.

MAJ Byron Oyler True, but during the period we're talking about they probably weren't working either. I hear you and understand but being in the lower socioeconomic level should have no impact on parents wanting the best possible for their children. Actually it should be just the opposite.

True, so long as you know how to admit nothing, deny everything and make counter accusations and play victim you are good.
