..."“Our study found that regular consumption of a self-reported diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat was associated with increased levels of LDL cholesterol – or “bad” cholesterol – and a higher risk of heart disease,” lead study author Dr. Iulia Iatan with the Healthy Heart Program Prevention Clinic, St. Paul’s Hospital and University of British Columbia’s Centre for Heart Lung Innovation in Vancouver, Canada, said in a news release.

“This study provides an important contribution to the scientific literature, and suggests the harms outweigh the benefits,” said Christopher Gardner, a research professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center who has conducted clinical trials on the keto diet. Gardner was not involved in the study.

“Elevated LDL cholesterol should not be dismissed as simply a negligible side effect of a VLCD (very-low-calorie diet) or ketogenic diet,” Gardner said, pointing to the higher risk of cardiovascular events in individuals with higher ketone levels in the blood, when compared to those on a more standard diet.

In the study, researchers defined a low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) diet as 45% of total daily calories coming from fat and 25% coming from carbohydrates. The study, which has not been peer reviewed, was presented Sunday at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session Together With the World Congress of Cardiology."...

Interesting as the article is….. I was on a …… mostly Paleo diet for two years. I got down to 170lbs, almost the weight I was when I left the service. My blood pressure was great, my blood sugar went from just over 100 to consistently in the middle 80’s to low 90’s, but the most interesting thing was my cholesterol. At 20 years old, the first time I knew my cholesterol, it was in the 270’s. It stayed that way, without taking medication, until I had been on the Paleo diet for approximately 8 months. To my surprise, for the first time in my life, my cholesterol fell below 200 (192). I have never taken medication for cholesterol. It stayed below 200 until about two years ago ( No longer Paleo now). I had a Cardiac Calcium test with a result of less than 1 last year.
My LDL readings have always been high with the exception of the time spent on the paleo diet. While I have yet to be able to get a Doctor to order an LDL partial size test. I do believe, as I have read in some smaller studies, that it is only the small particle LDL that actual causes the majority of plaque in the arteries. I believe that my LDL must be, primarily, large particle. This would possibly explain why I have a Cardiac Calcium test score of less than 1 yet I have had high LDL readings almost my whole life.
I could be an anomaly but that’s what I experienced from my time on that type of diet….
