If the Coast Guard had hospitals and nursing staff, I probably would have gone that way. There really is no excuse for the CG not to have the medical care their members and families deserve. And yes, I know their stations can be in some remote areas, but their health care techs should have realistic promotion opportunities and advanced training.
I remember our independent duty techs in the AF, who were stationed in remote areas. I remember one of the TSgt’s where I was stationed who was an independent med tech who was going to be headed to a remote assignment. He wanted to get some real hands on intubations prior. We had him join us in the OR and he was able to get quite a few intubations under very controlled circumstances.

Shame, but all the services are hurting when it comes to recruiting.
