I would say that the essential elements in a successful counter offensive are Personnel, Equipment, Training and Leadership, I don't see the Ukrainians having enough of any of those elements to mount an attack. The Russians are firing artillery rounds that out pace the Ukrainians as much as 5 to 1, which means they are inflicting more casualties on the Ukrainians than they are taking. The decisions to fight Strongpoint Urban Battles in Mariupol and now Bakhmut seems to have stripped them of their best units and I suspect that the access to Bakhmut is being left on purpose since the Ukrainians continue to push troops into an area that is just a meatgrinder.
The concept that Urban Areas favor the defender only applies if the Offensive Army isn't willing to turn the city into a series of overlapping craters. That seems like the Russian Strategy as far as I can find from either side that I actually believe.

I'm pretty indifferent about sides in this conflict. I have strong suspicions about any Country that makes Stepan Bandera's birthday a national holiday and the Russians are big boys and can take care of themselves, but getting any kind of real information about what's happening on the ground is hard. I expect the Russians and Ukrainians to lie about things, I just wish our own people would tell us the straight dope, and they aren't.
