While I appreciate the author's viewpoint as a personal goal and personal / private viewpoint, I abhor it as a narrative.

I would hope that all Americans appreciate the freedom they enjoy. I would hope all Americans recognize the cost of that freedom. But......

True freedom means they are under no obligation to do so. True freedom means they are under no obligation to be "worthy" of the sacrifice others have made. And....

It denies the nature of sacrifice. I cannot speak for every veteran, and I certainly cannot speak for the fallen. But when I was in, we would talk from time to time about why we did what we did. What our goals were, what our motivations were. Not a single person mentioned hoping Americans EARNED their service, or the worthiness of the populace. Every single person I talked to said, in one way or another, that their service was their personal choice. They CHOSE to serve and sacrifice, regardless of what the folks back home thought or did.

That is what true sacrifice is. The beneficiaries don't have to earn the sacrifice - before OR after it is made. The person gives of themself freely and willingly with no expectations. Exhorting others to earn that sacrifice post hoc cheapens it.

At least that's how I see it.

I would concur, many of those whom I served with, myself included spoke of Love of Country and Patriotism. The general populace are great and wonderful people but there are a lot of Turds out there who only prey upon Society in general. That was not our concern, keeping the US safe for generations to come was.
