Had Russians paid attention to their history, they'd have known this is their way of conducting war. They may want to read about WW1 and WW2.

I think that Putin thought he was going to take Kiev in the first few days and the war would be over. Shock and Awe 3.0 didn't happen and a war of attrition started. Russia apparently doesn't have a reserve force, so the massed troops are all there is. If he releases some for leave, they are weaker on the front lines. The best thing these guys can hope for is to be wounded enough to fall back to a safer area.
