"It was loaded, and the gun went off and shot his girlfriend, he said."
That's BS. The gun didn't "go off and [shoot] his girlfriend". He pointed the gun at her and pulled the trigger.

The only time I have had a gun go off was with a M1 Carbine. The firing pin is a floater, so after a few several rounds go through it the grime builds up and the pin sticks and a second shot immediately follows the planned shot. I was told this is called a "slap shot" and is quite common. When it happened to me, I fortunately had enough training to automatically keep the weapon pointed down range. I've never had any mishap with a pistol.

Good grief, who ever taught him that it's okay to play with a weapon, to point it at someone and pull the trigger because it's all in fun and hey, the gun isn't loaded?

I still remember the lessons from the NRA gun course when I was 12. To date, I always check the chamber, mostly these days to be sure there is one in the pipe. When my grandchildren are around, the firearms are locked in the safes or on my person. No exceptions.
