One of my favorite stories about him was he was criticized for firing Police Officers who took part in a strike in Boston but replied..."There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time.”

He was a true Vermonter. He earned the nickname Silent Cal. He didn't say much, but when he did, you could count on what he said.
