SGT Mary G. excellent City... shame that there aren't more like them.
This refugee had paid it forward...
..."Mohammed Munir arrived in the United States in October 2017. In Afghanistan, he had worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army and subsequently received a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) allowing him to start a new life in the United States. He says his first few months were difficult adapting. “Finding a job at the beginning was a little bit difficult because I had been teaching at a university for many years. I started working as a cashier, which helped me become more familiar with U.S. culture and allowed me to improve my English,” says Munir.

An experienced educator, he now works for Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains as an education coordinator, helping other refugees arriving in Albuquerque. According to Munir, “it’s my turn to use my knowledge and experience to help other people.”...

SGT (Join to see) High crime rate here - though not from the refugee population - that is often connected to foreign nationals who cross and recross the southern border. Huge round up of a fentanyl ring not so many weeks ago. Back in the 90s when Santa Ana CA chased away as many criminals as possible, many ended up here, because of the major N/S and E/W interstate, intersecting in the middle of town. If they make it here without getting caught at any border they usually have free access to travel in all directions to "ply their wares". It is a horrific problem everywhere. Apparently the fentanyl originate in China and comes into the U.S.A. through Mexico - or so the story goes. Other than that . . .

Many refugees become involved in community work and giving back. One of our Iraqi refugees from over 20 years ago, after ABQ was designated a sanctuary city for Iraqi refugees, is a world-renown classical Iraqi musician, a composer who is an Oud virtuoso, who performs his work, sometimes with an ensemble - on tour also. He has become more or less a national treasure and was also a National Heritage Fellowship Award Recipient. He came from Syria after having been imprisoned in Iraq and tortured for his political views. (I have no idea what they were, other than desiring peace - haven't asked him specifics, not something he thrives on recalling. I suppose he may not have supported Saddam, and said so.) Immigrant or not, not everyone has gifts appreciated by many that more easily propel them to opportunities for success, wherever they live, in ways that reflect well on them, the heritage of their origin, and the places that are their home.
I met numerous 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation immigrants through friends when I was new to ABQ - all good people who give as much or more than they got when they were starting out.
