Three people were killed Saturday in a racially motivated attack after a gunman targeted Black people at a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, in one of several weekend shootings that again shocked Americans in public places – from stores to football games to parades.
“This shooting was racially motivated and he hated Black people,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said at a news conference early Saturday evening.
Waters said the shooter, who he described as a White man in his 20s, shot and killed himself after the attack. The suspect left behind what the sheriff described as three manifestos outlining his “disgusting ideology of hate” and his motive in the attack.

(AP) — A masked white man fatally shot three Black people inside a Jacksonville, Florida, Dollar General store in a predominately African-American neighborhood on Saturday, in an attack where he used a gun painted with a swastika, officials said. The shooter, who had also posted racist writings, then killed himself.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters told a news conference that the attack that left two men and one woman dead was definitely “racially motivated.”
“He hated Black people,” Waters said after reviewing the man’s writings, which were sent to federal law enforcement officials and at least one media outlet shortly before the attack. He added that the gunman acted alone and “there is absolutely no evidence the shooter is part of any larger group.”
Waters said the shooter, who was in his 20s, used a Glock handgun and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with at least one of them painted with a swastika. He was wearing a bullet-resistant vest.
He said the shooter had once been involved in a 2016 domestic violence incident and was once involuntarily committed to a mental hospital for examination. He did not provide further details on those incidents...

Methodology
Funded by the National Institute of Justice (award number 2018-75-CX-0023), and recipient of global media attention, the public mass shooter database project includes four phases :
1. Creation of a comprehensive database of all mass public shootings from 1966 to 2020 coded on nearly 200 life history variables, including mental health history, trauma, interest in past shootings, and situational triggers.
2. Examination of community-level socio-ecological factors of where mass public shootings take place, including, but not limited to, crime rates, measures of social inequality, community mobility, availability of mental health resources, and prevalence of gun stores.
3. In-depth life history interviews with living mass shooters who are currently incarcerated and follow-up interviews with key stakeholders (e.g., family members, first responders, survivors, experts) in the communities where shootings took place.
4. Dissemination of findings, creation of this public website, and implications for evidence-based prevention strategies. The work is guided by rigorous ethical protocols from the Institutional Review Board at Hamline University and a steadfast commitment to no notoriety for mass shooters.

How are acts of mass violence connected to white supremacy?
Research has demonstrated that there is a positive correlation between mass violence like shootings and white supremacist ideologies. White supremacy has always been synonymous with acts of terrorism and in the desire to commit large scale murder and violence against its victims: - immigrants, LGBTQ folks, people of the Jewish faith, its naysayers, but mainly Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in the United States.
It is a common misconception that mental illness is the sole driving force of mass violence.
According to the APA, “Recent mass shootings have inevitably led to news reports of the suspected shooters' mental health, but psychological research shows there is no clear link between mental illness and violence”.

The FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program serves as the national repository for crime data voluntarily collected and submitted by law enforcement. Its primary objective is to generate reliable information for use in law enforcement administration, operation, and management.
