It’s a little-known federal law that impacts tens of thousands of military families across the country. Specifically, the spouses fallen heroes leave behind.
If those widows and widowers remarry before age 55, they must forfeit certain survivor benefits.
“The current law means that a surviving spouse who remarries before the age of 55 loses all their benefits. They lose their money from the VA and the DOD, they lose health insurance, education benefits, access to VA home loans, the right to be buried with their late spouse, all of it,” said Ashlynne Haycock-Lohmann, deputy director for government and legislative affairs at TAPS, or the ‘Tragedy Assistance Program For Survivors.’

I feel they need to pass that. Widows and widowers lose their property tax exemptions, too if they move or have to sell their home after the loss of their service member. Personally, I had to leave the job force 14 years ago, sacrificing my pension and retirement to caregive for my husband. If something happens to him, lord forbid, all of the income stops. The DIC (Death Indemnity Clause) is only around $1500. per month. I think that there should be a grace period after a service members death so the surviving spouse can find employment and help stabilize their family during their time of grief.
