The Hobo Code: The Secret Language of the Working Class

Sgt (Join to see) Fugitive slaves had similar codes to assist in their journey to Canada. One I recall was the pattern of a quilt and how it was hung on a cloth an outdoor clothesline.

This is well known in the Scranton Area. There used to be so many RRs around here even so grew up you couldn’t walk a block without crossing one.
