Days after a bipartisan group of lawmakers censured Rep. Rashida Tlaib for deploying an anti-Semitic slogan, the Michigan Democrat appeared at an event organized by Muslim groups with track records of anti-Semitism and support for the terrorist group Hamas.

I neither like nor support Tlaib. As a former Michigander who still has close ties to the state, I am embarrassed by her. Buuuuut...
Tlaib BELIEVES in her words and actions. So does the majority of her district.
All a censure is is a vote to say "we don't like that." That's it. No loss of pay, no loss of vote, not ineligible for re-election, not kicked out of party, none of it. It has no ACTUAL effect.
If I were in Congress and I were censured for doing/saying what I - and my constituents - thought was right, I would wear that censure like a badge of honor. I would fundraise on it. I would campaign on it. I would throw it back in the face of every single Rep who voted against me and "my people."
Censure holds neither fear nor punishment for the true believer.

I personally believe we have a bad habit of pushing those with unpleasant thoughts into the closet. We are like, 'oh, you cannot say those things so racist, bigoted, and the nasty people go hide into their circle of friends and we never find out who they really are. No let her speak freely so we can find out if Gretchen Whitmore and the people of Michigan really are like this. Allow those in Michigan to see her real colors and we can see who is patriotic this country and who is not.

She represents her district, which as of a few years ago had the highest concentration of Arab immigrants in America. I would wager this is still true, but have not researched it. So, yes, she is speaking for her district.
But she is not representing, and does not represent, the state. There is no way she would win state wide election for Senator. I doubt she could even win the Democratic primary. But her district? Sure.
But using Tlaib to paint Michigan or Whitmer as supporting those views is a but too much of a stretch.
