When Tim Alberta, son of a born-again Christian pastor, was growing up, the church was a sanctuary from the world of politics. The late Rt. Rev. John Spong said that the white evangelical church was in crisis well BEFORE Mr. Trump appeared. He said that all churches were and are in crisis, all were and are losing church memberships and that it's, at least in part, because hardly anyone believes in the symbols, the faith, and the traditions of the Christian religion. Episcopal Bishop Spong wrote about the Christian faith surviving by becoming a 21st century faith. He was, of course, controversial but he certainly was a man who thought about and then wrote about his prophetic vision.
