Yeah, you certainly don't want your peon, low-wage employees working together for their own benefit. They should learn to trust their corporate masters to look out for them, the way the founding fathers intended.

CMSgt Marcus Falleaf - You can be the kind of leader that looks out for their people while getting the mission accomplished, or you can be the kind that kisses up to the CO and treats his people like crap as long as the old man is happy. A person's stand on labor union tells me what kind of leader they are.

There is a way to treat your people. Do it wrong and it eventually shuts you down. To force management to accept a union is definitely a step in the wrong direction.

CMSgt Marcus Falleaf - How so? Apparently they would rather shut down that treat their people well. Why shouldn't employees be able to work together for their common benefit? Or do you just trust the big corporation to do the right thing?

We have a union! You can't make business decisions without consulting with us!

No. You are employees, not owners. If you want a say in how the business is run, go buy stock. Otherwise, STFU and do your job, for as long as THE OWNERS give you one.

MSgt Steve Sweeney A smart one.

Are/were you in the habit of asking Airmen Basic which targets to bomb?

Decisions about which stores to open / close / re-vamp are business decisions for the owners and board. The union being able to block store closures is akin to the E4 mafia deciding that, no, they DON'T want to charge that hill.

Sorry. That's not your decision.

SFC Casey O'Mally - Is the 'Airmen Basic' a forward observer? Then you might want his input on which targets to bomb. I know your kind. You wear the rank to feel superior to anyone of lower rank thinking there is no way they could be smarter than you are. Certainly don't want any of the peons voicing an opinion and certainly don't want them looking out for their fellow employees. Your 'STFU' remark tells me everything I need to know about your leadership style.

MSgt Steve Sweeney My leadership style WAS the type that got shit done. Yes, there were some hurt feelings. But remarkably few, because, while I did not invite the Privates into the planning sessions, I DID get their feedback at time of execution, and during AARs. But if they decided they just didn't like the mission that higher HQ sent down? Yes, the ABSOLUTELY got a big cup of STFU. Because we don't pick the missions, we figure out how to accomplish them. And my troops took a great deal of pride in being able to get shit done. Even shit no one else thought was possible. Better, faster, and with less whining. And when you build that spirit of can-do camaraderie, you'd be amazed at how well troops respond. But I guess I don't know what I am talking about because you already know everything you need to know about what my leadership style was.

But there is a difference.
How to make improvements in the way a specific store operates - employee feedback all day, everyday. But WHICH stores to keep open? Nope, not their lane.

But my leadership style NOW is non-existent. I am HAPPILY the low man on the totem pole in my current position. Because I don't need to be in charge or trade on my rank or position. I have been offered a move up, which I turned down. There goes THAT ignorant prejudice, I guess.

SFC Casey O'Mally - You can tell stories about how you were the best NCO in the military all day long. You may even believe them. Not really the point though, and yes, I have been around long enough to have a pretty good idea of your leadership style regardless of the stories you want to tell.... It is all in the telling.

They should be allowed to open or close any stores they want. Not a fan of Starbucks but not a fan of the federal government sticking their nose into places they don't belong.
