when we had two patrols, when Nixon was president, Blue patrol was 8 hour, searchlight was 12 hours (when Nixon was at Key Biscayne or on Bebe Reboso's island off the coast) we would make low passes over all shipping off the coast of Florida, we would spot Russian "fishing trawlers", no nets but lots of antennas, when we made low pass the Coast Guard Photographers Mate and myself would take pictures out the starboard hatch, someone on the "Trawler" would be taking pictures us or watching us with binoculars. The aircrafts were HU16E's Grumman Albatross SeaPlanes. Slow, Noisy, smelly, vibration filled flights, when we would disembark we were still vibrating after 8 or 12 hours on patrol. I'm sorry I took an early out, I should have stayed for 20 and retired with a pension. Hindsight is 20/20. #Semper_Paratus Pic is HU16E taking off.

Can't imagine many of the crew or their families are complaining. On the down side, I had a friend stationed there who once told me that on enlisted pay about all he could afford to do was drive around the island a couple times during a day.

When I was on active duty, everybody said Hawaii was really expensive, and nobody wanted to be assigned there.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen
MSgt Dale Johnson Yes, but vacations are different from actually living there. I had a 2 month TDY there in the 80s and even with the extra TDY pay couldn't afford eating at all the places we loved when there on vacation. Then there's the commuting to work traffic nightmare that most vacationers never see.
