USDA only cares about the large farms. In my area there were many small farms with 320 to 640 acres, they made a living of the land with some cattle pigs and chickens besides the land used for crops. In the 50's they decided that only large farms would survive and now where we had busy small towns and lots of kids in the schools we have schools closing or closed a main st that barely exists and 4 or 5 farms that are farming what 100 or more use to farm. The farmers left can't find people to operate their equipment as there are no more small farm kids to work for them. Now the farm workers are coming from Mexico, South Africa and god knows where else. Are times better? Maybe in some respects but the farm culture has about disappeared.

I had to take the Better Half out for groceries because she wasn't feeling well yesterday. I was thinking about our conversation and was remembering all the farms in our Northern tier Counties when I was a boy. I remember driving up in the old Rambler Station Wagon to buy bushels of potatoes and other stuff. No more, they are long gone. It made me think of this song I like.

there are a few out here that do plant a small scale truck farm stuff. One guy plants and acre or so of early potato's that usually ready by early July. His price is higher than the store but are those non irrigated early reds ever good.
