I've got another theory as to his open refusal...
He privately talked with folks who were coming back, and realized that while on the ground we were doing what we could to win (survive might be a better word) anyone who wasn't on the ground with them was trying to accomplish anything less than that.

I don’t know what he was thinking. No matter what he was thinking he could be a conscientious objector; being a boxer I doubt he would see any hard time.
