The magnetic shield is weakening, because of polar "wandering" so the normal activity of the sun has at this stage in the ~11 year cycle, makes the geomagnetic storms strong. So, a lot more auroras, and more that are visible further south.
Looks like the folks responsible for the grids have done a good job of . . . whatever it is that has to be done to protect the grid from from the sun's strong magnetic storm!
