Well the IOC president is spot on. I know you and others here want a simple linear definition but that does not exist. You have women born with the XY chromosome yet have functioning female reproductive organs. So are these individuals men because of the XY chromosome or are they women because they have functioning female reproductive organs? How do you classify them?

In a human body of 37 trillion cells your body produces several trillion mutations on a daily basis. Most cause no issues but some do. You have to understand it is not as simple as you think as one single amino acid paring with the wrong amino acid resulted in sickle cell anemia. Somewhere along the way some 6-10 thousand years ago when the default eye color for humans was brown a mutation occurred on the HERC2 gene that caused issues in the OCA2 gene expression which resulted causing blue eyes.

Of course when you get to the issue of Trans individuals one must remember that there are 2 independent processes that occur in the womb. The first process is what you find between your legs. It either dangles or it doesn't. The second and most important process is what occurs during the third trimester and after birth. That process through the estrogen pathways in the brain determine if one with a dangle ends up with a Masculinized brain or not. If the dangle brain is not exposed to estrogen via the estrogen pathways in the brain then there is the mismatch between the Brain and Body that we call Gender Dysphoria . A recent study found twenty-one variants in 19 genes in the estrogen signaling pathways of the brain critical to establishing whether the brain is masculine or feminine These variants were not found in the control group.

Of course there is this: Many chromosome configurations other than simple 46,XX or 46,XY can result in disorders of sex development. These include 45,XO (only one X chromosome), and 47,XXY or 47,XXX - both cases have an extra sex chromosome, either an X or a Y.
