Do we need a hard look at our federal employees and budget? Most probably. But that look, and any actions taken, must be done, as I have said before, with a scalpel, not a chainsaw. And we must also look at the end results.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Even after every legal deduction and loophole, and even after the the IRS goes after and recover all the unpaid taxes that they have the time and people to manage that, there is still $500B in unpaid, unrecovered taxes out there every year, personal income, corporate and payroll. 70% is personal income tax.
For the income tax unpaid, 40% of it is the to 10% of earners, the other 60% is spread across the lower brackets.

This tax gap is a good argument for growing the IRS, at least on the recovery side. $500B of tax gap is a lot more money than what a larger IRS would cost.
