Candy and soda are treats anyway, or at the very least that's how they should be seen as and consumed. Same goes for a trip to any fast food chain. They were never meant to be a regular part of what we consume.
Ultimately this doesn't solve the issue, yet, that the food that we're supposed to be eating costs astronomically more, pound for pound. A six-pack of a bottled Pepsi product is more bang for the money than the same weight in almost any fruit or vegetable in the produce section.
It pains me to keep a relatively strict threshold on what I consider to be an acceptable price for produce in general. $1.50/lb is my limit. That plus going off of what my kiddos will eat usually keeps me to only carrots and onions as of late; unless something goes on sale. On occasion I'll buy apples or oranges.
I don't even want to talk about how stupidly priced meat as a whole has gotten; even when I was obviously in cattle country beef was horrifically priced.
