National Haiku Day, an initiative of The Haiku Foundation, celebrates the art form every April 17. A haiku is an ancient form of Japanese poetry that consists of three lines with the syllable structure “five-seven-five” — although this is contested for being a western way of teaching the haiku. Japanese haikus also count sounds, not only syllables. Haikus typically revolve around nature, the passing of seasons, or ephemeral beauty. At the risk of sounding like your high school English teacher, they rely more on images than metaphors. They’re also very concise, due to their short length. Try one!

My husband who is a retired 4th grade teacher had his students make haikus; some of them were excellent.

I remember one of my sons being at soccer practice in junior high. I was walking around the edge of the field and some school papers had blown next to the woods around the field. A student had, out of boredom no doubt, written a sarcastic but very comical haiku about Japanese art and literature. A very well done drawing of a fish below a water fall accompanied the haiku. While I don’t think the student fully appreciated that he had mastered a lot about the haiku and Japanese art the the drawing and haiku were impressive.
