My father was near Trieste, Italy when they were told the war was over. Not for them however, the 363rd Infantry Regiment. They were ordered to occupy and secure Trieste from Yugoslav partisans, who claimed the city as theirs. Some fighting between the forces ensued. Orders came down that, for political reasons, this action would not be recorded in the Regiment's history and the soldiers were instructed not to discuss anything about the time. They did not return to CONUS until late August 1945. My father got home in October 1945.
