The problem stems from an institutional error that won't be easy to fix. Educational institutions of all levels have to eliminate the practice of teaching teachers. Think about it. What is the purpose of a PhD other than to qualify someone to teach. Thus, teachers can become teachers without any experience outside the institutions where they teach. Far better that they practice what they learn and then return to learning institutions with practical experience to teach others. Sadly, teachers who learn from teachers with no practical experience are indoctrinated with the belief that all knowledge is intellectual property. Hypothesizing then gives rise to Utopianism which is the breeding ground of every bane of mankind. On my list of American Presidents, Woodrow Wilson ranks dead last for this very reason. He conceived of intellectuals ruling over We the Rabble and we've suffered for it ever since...

I have to agree CPT Jack Durish. My second year in my BSN program one of my professors was one that only worked a short period in a hospital and then started on her Masters degree and was teaching. Everything she taught was straight from the book. I would get into arguments with her in clinicals in the same hospital I worked in. She didn’t care what the procedures were in that hospital, they weren’t what was in her book.
I didn’t become an Asst Professor of Nursing until I had over 30 years of nursing practice in a diverse number of civilian and military hospitals. Interestingly, in the HBCU university I taught at, all the nursing professors had long histories of clinical nursing and/or nurse practitioner practice.

Maj Robert Thornton - Every tradesman and professional gains knowledge and skill with experience. I hated school, every second of it, because, even at a tender age, I could drive teachers to distraction by asking questions and they hated me for it. They complained to my parents that I was disrupting classes by demanding too much of their attention. I didn't give a damn about their attention. They didn't have answers...

Maj Robert Thornton - Right now you can graduate with your BSN in May and start NP in the fall if you have the grades but after 22yrs as an RN with two board certifications, I cannot get into NP because of my undergrad GPA. Fortunately, CRNA still has higher experience requirements. I have taken my GI Bill and am learning to work on airplanes, hope to build one in the near future, and will work on my own.

Ignorance and hatred of any kind doesn't belong in higher education at all, yet it does. Why? Because even the literate need a fall guy when their plans fail.
