This approach to re-renaming is a tacit admission that it was wrong to originally name the bases after Confederate leaders (and that the previous administration was justified in renaming them). The only minor difference is the squabbling over which names are used (but both sides do agree that it shouldn't be Confederate leaders).

Very interesting article: 7 Army bases will revert to to the former Confederate names but the bases will refer to nine highly decorated U.S. Army soldiers of the same name, ie. Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon, a Spanish-American War Medal of Honor recipient and a World War I pilot, for Ft. Gordon. May be an effective political middle ground.

The one name change that I wish stayed was Fort Moore. That dude was a grade A certified badass.
