My great-grandmother graduated high school in 1900 as Valedictorian, and the local paper published her valedictory.

Holy crap was she intelligent! I've been writing a series of stories about the same person as a means of introducing my own daughter to her, and before reading her valedictory I thought perhaps I made the character more intelligent than she was. After reading her valedictory I'm not sure I made her character intelligent enough.

Actually, the 1872 Gakusei was a blend of French, German, and American influences (in that order). The American influence was the least of the three, coming primarily in the form of one man, David Murray, being an advisor to the Meiji government. They got the centralized education system, particularly the structure of a national, state-controlled system with standardized curricula and teacher training, from the French, as well as the idea of a "Ministry of Education" (over a hundred years before we had a Department of Education). From the Germans, they took the idea of compulsory, universal education and the use of the education system to foster (indoctrinate) national unity, as well as the concept of strict discipline in school.
