Why Marriage Survives

Divorce is down and the share of children in two-parent families is up. Marriage as a social institution is showing new strength—even among groups that drifted away from the institution in the 20th century, including Black and working-class Americans. And contrary to criticisms on the left and right, that’s good news not only for America’s kids, but also—on average, though not always—for married men and women today…. For children, less divorce and a small decline in childbearing outside wedlock mean more stability.
