My father in law was on a ship going around Okinawa when the bomb was dropped. He would have been in the first wave if the invasion had happened. His chances of surviving were likely 1 in 10 if the battle for Okinawa was an indicator of Japanese willingness to defend their homeland. I was there 27 years after the battle and still many areas fenced off because of dud shells. The bomb likely saved many lives on both sides

Something brought up on Unsubscribe Podcast was that the US government anticipated so many casualties, if an invasion had to happen, that Purple Hearts awarded to recipients from the end of 1945 through the War on Terror we're all originally manufactured with that invasion of Japan in mind.

My father was sitting in his tent on a hillside near Trieste, waiting to learn if his division was going to go home or go to the Pacific. Relief would be a mild word to reflect their feelings when they learned of this.
