As much as I respect the President, I am upset over the path of the US and Russia deciding the future of Ukraine without the leader of Ukraine being invited to the conversation. It is too reminiscent of Chamberlain and Hitler deciding the fate of Czechoslovakia in 1938, with no representation by the Czechs themselves. The Western allies ceded a significant portion of Czechoslovakia to the Nazis, on the promise that Germany had no other territorial ambitions. Soon enough, Hitler's forces occupied all of Czechoslovakia, and encouraged by the lack of Great Power opposition, moved into Poland. World War II was on.
Everyone has ignored the Budapest Memorandum (1994), in which Russia promised not to violate the territorial integrity of several former components of the USSR, including Ukraine, in exchange for those new countries giving up their nuclear weapons. Putin violated that promise when Russia invaded and then annexed Crimea, followed by the even more drastic attack that is now going on. the idea of letting Russia keep parts of Ukraine, which Pres. Trump has implied, is like a flashback. And, as Churchill said of Chamberlain, "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
