The question is if he could have swallowed a Volkswagen whole. If you don't know what I'm referring to, then you obviously haven't been an angler at some point in your life and listened to the "Gospel Truth!" fish stories...

I used to Scuba Dive and I had an in-law that was a commercial diver for the COE. I was always hearing stories of giant catfish around the river locks. Considering what has been caught on rod and reel, I cut them some slack. A 120 lb Blue Cat or a 100 lb Flathead is a huge fish in it's own right and no reason why there isn't bigger ones.
I live in the northern edge of the area in the Midwest/South where Noodling or Grabbling is still legal and somewhat popular. That is reaching under banks, rocks or into hollow logs and grabbing catfish with your hands. Southern boys have some weird hobbies.

The Biggest North American Catfish of All Time
If there's such a thing as an “everyman’s fish", it would be the catfish. Here are some of the biggest catfish ever caught in North America.

He should have weighted it. The IGFA All Tackle Record is the same length, 281cm, and weighted in at 297 lbs 9 oz. The species is a Wels Catfish.
