On August 26, 1967, 42-year-old Major George Everette "Bud" Day, a Forward Air Controller with the U.S. Air Force, was flying an F-100 over North Vietnam when his aircraft was struck by heavy ground fire. He broke his arm upon landing and severely injured his left knee. He was captured by the Viet Cong upon landing. He has the most incredible story of courage and perseverance. He escaped and was recaptured, spending 67 months as a POW. He is the only person to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Air Force Cross, and is regarded as one of the most decorated airmen in history.
