How Did Salt and Pepper Become the Two Most Common Seasonings?

I've got that exact same pepper grinder plus a taller version that I picked up when I was stationed in Turkey.

My wife is Japanese and their salt and pepper seems much more mild/health friendly.

I've had Japaneese salt in Japan and Okinawa but never noticed any difference.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen we use a salt/pepper mix on EVERYTHING awe cook and I swear by it. I’ll post a picture of the packaging. Oishie!
