China is not hiding what it is doing in the East China Sea. On November 16, Chinese Coast Guard ships pushed through the waters around the Senkaku Islands, which Japan administers and China claims as the Diaoyu. Beijing branded this a “rights enforcement patrol.” In reality, it was a political shot across Tokyo’s bow after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan could respond militarily if China attacks Taiwan.

Correction: Japan OWNS the Senkakus, it doesn't merely administer them. China didn't give a shit about them until oil was discovered around them.
Japan is actually party to three territorial disputes, one each with Russia, South Korea, and China. Japan is right when it comes to the Senkakus. Japan is wrong when it comes to the Liancourt Rocks (by the way, the United States wisely calls them that, rather than using the Korean or Japanese name). And it's 50/50 when it comes to the northern territories. Here's why. At the Yalta Conference, the Soviet Union agreed to join the war against Japan 2-3 months after victory in Europe. In return, it would get the southern half of Sakhalin island and the Kuril Islands off the north coast of Hokkaido. When Japan surrendered unconditionally, it was legally accepting that outcome. HOWEVER, geologically, the two largest of the islands seized by the Soviets, closest to Hokkaido, are part of Hokkaido, not part of the Kurils. Now, of course, neither country is willing to accept this split decision, but it would be the correct one. In practice, however, Russia needs all of the islands to ensure the security of its supply line from Vladivostok to its Pacific boomer fleet, which is based in the Sea of Okhotsk, where it's too shallow for our attack submarines to get in undetected. In the summer, they can go up the west side of Sakhalin to get there, but that's frozen in winter, so they need to go around the other side, and they can't effectively secure that route without forces on Iturup and Kunashiri islands. So as a practical reality, there's zero chance of them returning the islands.
