Good story, but it also reflects generation gap of various veterans. I visited a VFW multiple times with a veterans running group. We were treated warmly, but there was cultural divide between our demographics, experiences and interests and regular patrons of the hall.

It does. Today’s injured military member has a better chance of survival relative to WWII, Korea, and Nam. So, more battle scars, more mental health issues, and speaking for myself, a lack of desire to sit around in a bar drinking. Or not drinking, for that matter. They had a reputation as a place to smoke cigarettes and drink cheap booze. The one I checked out in California was dank and smelled like spilt beer with tobacco overtones.
