When I was the operations officer for a Strategic Communications Center I had a cork board behind my desk where I would pin reminders. I also kept on display there the most egregious example of bad writing of the week. There was, however, one note that reached me and was pinned to the board never to be replaced. In addition to the To, From, Date, and Subj (blank), the body of the note contained what appeared to be seven words. "Appeared to be" because each was composed of letters of the alphabet, and seven because there was a space between each group. As a student of history I had plenty of experience reading text written before spelling became standardized. Still, I couldn't read these "words". Also, there was no punctuation or capitalization. I frequently caught visitors to my office reading this "note" over my shoulder. The pained, perplexed look on their faces clued me into what they were doing. After some moments they invariably asked, "What is that?" A note I would reply simply. "What does it say?" I responded with a shrug. "Have you called this person to find out?" "No." "Why not?" "It would spoil the suspense." "You should call," they demanded. "Why?" "I want to know what they're trying to say." "Then you call them." Listening to this "interview" with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez put me in mind of that note. If someone takes the trouble to find out what she's saying, please don't tell me and ruin the suspense...
