A great review of a needed formal and researched critique of the NYT 1619 Project. Got me thinking about the "founding of America." America is a nation, founded in 1776. Before that, America the nation did not exist. The continents of the Americas (North/South/Central) were never 'founded.' They existed eons before and long after 1619. One problem of the 1619 Project is that it conflates the two meanings...America as a nation and America as a continent. We do not call ourselves "American" because we live in North America, just as a citizen of Vietnam does not call himself an "Asian". The USA is the only nation in all the continents of the Americas, with the word "America" in its title. So we are called Americans...because "United States of Americans" is just too long, and a bit silly.
