My wife has had back issues for decades. She had done epidural steroids, she has a spinal nerve stimulator implanted, was told 10 years ago she didn’t need surgery.
This past year the pain has grown worse so she saw an Orthopedic Surgeon that suggested surgery. Neither of us trust an orthopedist that goes straight to surgery.
She made an appointment at Emory with a surgeon she saw years ago. This surgeon, in addition to her medical and Ortho accolades, has a doctorate in mechanical engineering from MIT. I trust her, and she only deals with lumbar spine.
She has the wife seeing a physical therapist, who is in a group that the surgeon has taught them Schroth, an exercise program to build strength in specific areas based on the exercises related to the individual problem. They may still need surgery but now have the proper muscular configuration to support them post op.
She may need surgery down the line, but a good deal of the pain has been relieved with the schroth training so far
