The thought of having a 'Star Trek' computer both amazes and terrifies me. What happens when a computer becomes truly sentient, a la Data, in STNG? Or more like HAL?

Because people. As a whole, people are stupid. People write the programming. There are quite a few very awesome individuals, but any project they start would have some asshat in the mix to screw things up.
Hal was programmed to do what he did in 2001. It wasn't a malfunction.
