I've been hoping that someone would take on this project. I've read both books and often wondered about their relationship to each other and WWI. Fortunately, the book is available at public libraries. BTW, did you know that you can "borrow" ebooks from many libraries? That should be the subject of another posting...

Tolkien stated that he did not write his stories as historical allegory and that he didn't like allegory.

I have also read that. However, it has never been any fun taking an author at their word. We "know" there's an allegory lurking in there, don't we? As strange as that may sound, there is a kernel of truth in it. All authors are influenced by their experiences. I would defy anyone who was subjected to the horrors of war to write without being influenced by it.
