Tolkien stated that he did not write his stories as historical allegory and that he didn't like allegory.

I have also read that. However, it has never been any fun taking an author at their word. We "know" there's an allegory lurking in there, don't we? As strange as that may sound, there is a kernel of truth in it. All authors are influenced by their experiences. I would defy anyone who was subjected to the horrors of war to write without being influenced by it.
