I sometimes wonder how often other Vietnam vets (and others of earlier times) stop and think when they see service men and women connecting with home via smart phones and computer technologies from distant battlefields. I do. We had letters and MARS. It was especially tough when news reporters and antiwar agitators (but I repeat myself) would inspire fear in our friends and family with fake news of our peril. Some even sent telegrams of our death.

I remember those times so very well. The only calls we could make were the pay phones on base and most of the times we had to wait in line to make that call. In Thailand letters were the only way.

Back in 74-75 we were able to use Mars once a month. This was at U-Tapao Thailand.

Well-stated as usual, my friend CPT Jack Durish Hindsight and technological progress for those of us who survive tend to bring wistful memories including compare and contrast. What if is the stuff of dreams :-)
