One mistake, according to bear experts (I live in the edge of Bear Country and routinely camp, hike, fish and hunt in Black Bear territory), all recorded black bear attacks are predatory. So if you are in the woods and a black bear is following/stalking you, he has decided that you are a meat Popsicle and you want to do everything in your power to convince him there are easier meals.
That said, I don't panic when I see one either. I occasionally raft guide for a friend of mine that outfits on the Russell Fork on the Kentucky Virginia Border. The last time, we had a bear join us for breakfast, but not in a bad way. We were staging our equipment at on of the remote shelters, no one else around. I had fixed coffee and walked up to my truck when I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. There on the other side of my buddy's truck was a very large black bear, less that 30' between us. Of course, my reaction was "oh F***, a bear". We looked at each other for awhile, and since he apparently wasn't going to do something stupid, I slowly moved away, still facing him. As soon as I started moving, he started moving away too. I came the conclusion that he has a similar reaction to mine, Oh F***, a human. Oh, he isn't doing anything stupid, I'll just slowly go my own way.
Snakes don't bother me either, unless I look down and see one attached to my leg. If that happened, in spite of advice to the contrary, I'm going to panic.
