This was just stupid. BTW, he told them he was illegal. They should have checked.

Yeah he had a US passport, family says he suffers from PTSD, and the police felt there was something mentally unstable with him. Chances are he wasn’t in the right state of mind when he was interrogated. All the documents and background check should’ve told them that.

He didn't help matters by saying he was illegally here, but the ICE officer could have and should have made a simple call to verify him by name and date of birth, social security number, passport number, or any combination thereof. If they thought it was fake, the ICE officer, once again can make a simple call to the experts in Vermont. I used to work for ICE and generally support their mission and work, but this was a very dumb thing to happen. I remember working two specific US citizen claims from people in ICE custody and they were both US citizens and obviously the ICE officer in those cases was a dumbass because both were very easy to find and both had US passports. On a good note, once they know, the people are released within 30 minutes and a lawsuit is on the way.

Yeah he didn’t help his case but then again law enforcement officials did acknowledge his erratic and irrational behavior so one can say his state of mind was already questionable when they were interrogating him. Perhaps they should’ve taken that into account and got a mental health counselor in there instead on ICE officers.
