This is common unfortunately. Also, when employers get tired of the Service Member being gone so much, they find ways to fire them. There are military friendly companies that do not do this.

My boss had no problem with my being in the military. His wife is proud that he has members of the military working there.

I find this issue to be the same as the issue of women getting pregnant in the military. Many people on this site said that women should not be allowed to get pregnant while on active duty, because their absence would hurt the unit. Here we have a similar situation with civilian companies. If a reservist is called up, or has to be gone for training, it hurts the company. Either someone has to pick up the slack and do the work of two people, or the company has to hire and train a temp worker (an expensive and time consuming process), or the work just doesn't get done, and profits suffer. Both getting pregnant and joining the reserves are voluntary matters, and both play an important part in ensuring the future of our country.

So it seems to me that if you are against women being allowed to get pregnant in the military and remain in, then you would have to be against employees being allowed to be in the reserves and stay employed. Of course, I'm on the side of the women and the employees in both these cases.

With all due respect... Military service is not the same as a civilian job, there is no comparison. It is illegal and the employer needs to be reported, a counsellor could be provided to go and speak to the employer if anyone thinks they are worth the effort. http://esgr.mil/
