I suggest everyone read a book called "Our Kids" by Robert Putnam to really understand this question. There are many reasons why school have declined. There is no simple fix. Schools reflect current issues in our society. Many of us attended public schools these schools do not exist today with all the problems schools are expected to solve.

I received a pretty good education from a public school, received the rest from the military.
