They served hot coffee and donuts from remodeled 2½ ton Army trucks to our front line units during World War II. The G.I.s enjoyed their kindhearted words and nice smiles. Three hundred twenty served during WWII, 52 would perish in the line of duty. These valiant Red Cross workers were known as Donut Dollies.
Prerequisites to serve included attractiveness, pleasant personality and some college. During Korea and Vietnam the requirements toughened: a college degree, the gift of gab, high moral standards, the ability to continue smiling when you needed to cry, and a pleasant appearance. Mary Robeck and Rachel Torrance were two these compassionate ladies.
