In the British military, few units are regarded as "elite" (in the historical context anyway) as the Highland regiments. From the Black Watch, to the Scots Greys... Highlanders have been leading British soldiers for generations. Like the Native Americans, this seems a bit of a paradox at first-considering Scottish/English history up until about 1750. The truth is, warrior traditions often survive the cultures that gave rise to them, and the conqueror often respects and emulates the conquered. This is one of the many reasons I dislike it when people try to judge the present by the past. As far as I'm concerned, the Native Americans are Americans... their traditions are part of OUR traditions; their warriors, part of our combined warrior culture. I'm even more proud that in my veins flows the blood of these indigenous peoples, the Highlanders, and the descendants of both who fought from the Revolution, right up to the present day.
