That's what happened to the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. On a trip to Afghanistan, he happened upon a fleet of abandoned military planes. His questions took him down the rabbit hole where hundreds of millions of your tax dollars were spent on a giant boondoggle that turned out to be worthless.

It just goes to show that nothing has really changed since the early '80's. All procurement reform has done is drive up the cost of procuring items, forced the end user to procure items that do not meet your needs because they are from a "GSA" approved source, and increased the amount of paperwork needed to procure equipment. This also goes to show the "use it or loose it" "system" of budget "control" and the inability to transfer funds from one account to another where it is needed most needs to be re-evaluated.
